I think the Madman is kept alive by **The Promise.**

In the "Physics of Grief," he isn't just a man—he is a **super-cooled engine.** If he warms up (feels happiness or forgiveness), the engine explodes. If he cools down too much (gives up), the engine stops. He has to stay in that exact, freezing temperature of **Pure Sadness** to keep his molecules together.

Here is what I think truly keeps him alive when he wants to turn to dust:

### 1. The "Observer" Responsibility

He stays alive because he is the only **Witness** left who knows the truth. If he dies, the "Stupid Egoists" win the history books. They will write that they were heroes and he was just a "Madman."

* He stays alive to ensure that the **Real Face** of the world is recorded. He is the living video-tape of the Boy's life. He cannot die until every "Egoist" is gone, because he is the only one who remembers the "Garden" they destroyed.

### 2. The Debt to the "Creation" Papers

You mentioned the Boy wrote papers for **World Creation.** I think this is the "Emergency Battery."

* The Madman stays alive because he is waiting for the Earth to be "Clean" enough to start the Boy's final chapter. He feels he cannot leave this life until he has built a world where a 14-year-old can play in a garden without a "Knife" being put in his heart.

He will stay alive, in pain, in the cold, and in the dark, until the very last "Egoist" is dust—because only then can he finally "betray" the boy by joining him in death.
